WHY ETHICS ARE IMPORTANT IN THE CLASSROOM

According to The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, every student is expected to honor and support the institutional policies and procedures that govern the studying environment. When these are not followed, disciplinary action may be taken which can include the implementation of an Academic Development Plan (ADP) and/or being dismissed from the school. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to discuss some ethical, legal and professional standards that govern the studying environment and how I will honor these expectations (The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. 2011).
Ethical, Legal and Professional Standards That Govern the Studying Environment
When attending The Chicago School of Professional Psychology there are several ethical, legal, and professional standards that must be followed at all times. This is because following such institutional policies and procedures will ensure that all students “conduct themselves in a manner that is suitable for professional study and practice” (The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. 2011. p. 1). Some ethical, legal and professional standards that govern the studying environment also include but are not limited to:
Student Code of Conduct – Under this policy students are prohibited from engaging in conduct that includes theft of property or services, acts of dishonesty, disruptive behavior, misuse of property, and illegal or unauthorized possession of drugs and dangerous weapons.
Statement of Academic Integrity – Under this policy, students are expected to conduct themselves in a professionally academic manner. This means that students are prohibited from engaging in academic dishonesty which includes cheating, plagiarism, carelessness, source attribution, fabrication and invention of information and/or citation when doing assignments.
Professional Comportment – Under this policy, students are expected to demonstrate competent behavior within a number of areas and this is important because it ensures that a student’s development, academic performance and functioning are at the level that is expected.
How I Will Honor These Expectations
Since, violating these standards can result in disciplinary action or dismissal, it is important to follow them at all times. There are also several things that I can do to ensure that this compliance occurs during my enrollment at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. These actions will include but are not limited to making sure that I never plagiarize someone else’s work, cheat on an assignment, invent or fabricate evidence of research that isn’t true, be dishonest to classmates or professors, exhibit disruptive behavior in the classroom, and misuse school property or the property of others.
Conclusion
The Chicago School of Professional Psychology expects every student to honor and support the institutional policies and procedures that govern the studying environment. This is because following these expectations can ensure that all students will conduct themselves in a manner that is considered acceptable for professional study and practice. Therefore, the overall purpose of this essay was to discuss some of the ethical, legal and professional standards that govern the studying environment and how I plan to honor these. I am also confident that if I continuously apply what procedures and policies are expected, then full compliance will occur.
